Good morning from a rainy Manhattan. It’s getting cold and dreary here and it feels like everyone is gearing up for a massively depressing winter. What can we do? There’s still a highly contagious, deadly virus spreading and a population approaching it in a million different ways. I’ve started having difficult conversations about rules and restrictions and how I plan to live my days out the rest of this year and into next. It sucks. But it’s the reality of this world. Some distractions? Ok! Here are today’s three picks:
1/ This is an essential read for any progressive American. I’ve thought a lot about protests and dissent and how to channel rage at the system. I’ve felt all the things. Hopelessness, fear, power, support, emptiness. Truly everything has washed over me in the past 7-9 months. This article feels like a deep exploration of those feelings. Of frustrations and pain and fear. Of trying to see the bigger picture. Of embracing the reality and the nuances of shifting understandings and beliefs. It’s a wonderfully written piece and I cannot recommend it enough.
It also made me go back and revisit my Women’s March video.
2/ I also loved reading this piece on Patreon, the internet site/in-between for content creators and their patrons. Paying for content is such an interesting topic and this piece puts a lens directly over it. It explores the history of patrons and then dives into how patronage works in contemporary society. Creating art for someone else is a complicated business. Chayka did the work to really explore that business and its’ impact on artists and the art they create.
3/ Finally check out this great piece from PBS on the Black Lives Matter movement and specifically the fight for Black Trans Lives. It’s a feature on Raquel Willis and the producers actually used some of my footage from filming at the Brooklyn Liberation March (brag!). The more we can share these stories the more open and accepting our world can become. Please consider spreading the word!
That’s all for this week. Have a safe and spooky Halloween.
