Good morning. I’m on time this week! I’m trying! Still kicking. Anyway, what’s new? It’s getting a bit colder here in NYC and the air is delicious. Fall is perfect. I went for a walk the other day and the thought, “Why would I want to be anywhere else?” actually crossed my mind. With stability/order/life disintegrating here in the States, I’ve thought a lot about leaving. There’s the disastrous non-response to Covid, the constant push to the far-right in every way, and the whole could lose my basic human rights thing. Why give to a place so inept at letting me just live? It’s a weird thing to have to consider, but something I’m considering nonetheless.
That said, here are some distractions! Some great things for you to get distracted with!
1/ This video produced by the NYT about how America bungled this Plague is an interesting and infuriating watch. So many people have died that did not need to die. It’s a decent reflection for this time. Take a watch.
2/ Abolition for the People. Colin Kaepernick and the team behind the medium channel (?) Level is upping the conversation about police abolition. It’s a collection of well written posts, with more to come I hope, about the anti-Blackness intrinsic to America’s policing system. Highly recommend giving them a follow and reading the posts. It’s a complicated topic and these intellectual leaders do a wonderful job of articulating their position.
3/ Minimalist Baker. I’m not much of a chef or baker. But, I’m trying to consider nutrition and food more as my body ages. The primary thing for me, at least throughout my life up until this point, has been convenience. I don’t want food to ever feel like work. A major luxury, I know, but a fact of my life nonetheless. So I’m starting small, with the minimalist baker - a blog that promotes dishes with 10 ingredients or less. Not sure if it’ll stick, but it’s a great resource to get started.
Have a great rest of your Thursday.
