Good morning. Writing today from the Upper West Side where the sunset last night was stellar.
This week’s recommendations are a bit strange - one on religion in Japan, one on attention and one on the woman behind Sex and the City. I’ve been finding my curiosity a bit more…discerning lately. I think that’s the word. I’m finding less and less content interesting or worthy of sharing. I wonder if it’s internal chaos? If it’s the bleak winter months? If it’s my own lack of drive?
Whatever it may be, let’s hope it fades and more bold, beautiful writing and content comes into my life and subsequently yours.
On to the recs:
1/ This was a super interesting thread on Japan and religion.
I’d never heard orthopraxic religion before. Very interesting and refreshing!
Also, this tidbit was fun:
For example, it would be entirely normal for someone in Japan to go to a Shinto shrine for blessings when a child, get married in a Christian wedding ceremony and have a Buddhist funeral when they die.
Kavanagh hosts a podcast called Decoding the Gurus where he and a co-host dissect the inaccuracies and issues with contemporary “gurus.” It’s long and not my favorite, but he has a huge catalogue if that’s your thing.
2/ This piece on attention and the internet.
But, on the Internet, where attention is the currency, obsession has become a default register.
3/ Jia Tolentino profiled Candace Bushnell and it was a nice little read. Bushnell is such an icon and a delight. Listening to her opinions really reminded me that good writers say things that stick and say what they mean with an intensity and certainty that I really respect.
That’s all for this week. Thanks for reading and feel free to share with anyone you think may be interested. I’ll be back next Thursday.
