Morning readers. Just going to canon ball into this weeks recommendations.
1/ This is one of the only two pieces I read on last weekends Oscars. The obvious story is the slap, but I was far more interested in the other ways the show disappointed. I think a lot of the criticism expressed here is fair and I, too, wish the focus was on movie making.
Caring about the Oscars, whether it’s for the films and people being honored or the promise of high glamour and razzle-dazzle, doesn’t mean you don’t care about climate change, social strife, war or income inequality. It just means you can multitask. Last night’s show, and the controversial decisions that went into it, seemed predicated on mocking or judging anyone who would otherwise look forward to the annual celebration, with an extra whiff of embarrassment or outrage that the Academy members would dare vote for anything other than Spider-Man: No Way Home.
2/ This is an interesting post about the different ages of bestselling authors. Lots of fun little data breakdowns and visualizations. It’s also seems to double down on the ideas that experience matters, that aging into something is real and that there’s always time to write.
3/ Over the weekend I went to the Fotografsika museum here in NYC. They have an excellent exhibit called “Nude” featuring 30 female-identifying artists from 20 different countries. The photographers center images on naked bodies through a variety of different ways, as the curators say, “seeking to subvert the historically predominant male gaze and celebrate the human form.” It was an excellent exhibit with a follow up featuring the work of Kia Labeija. This section was especially moving to me. Here’s a piece on Labeija’s excellent work. Highly recommend a visit if you’re in the city.
That’s all for this week. Please share this newsletter with anyone you think might be interested.
Have a great day!
