It’s been a slow, uphill climb of a week. But, that’s ok. Trying to be kind and gentle with it. What else can you do? Oh also, I’m sure as hell not interested in making a fool of anyone today. Imagine.
Anyway, some recs for this week! It’s been a fulfilling week of content, that’s for sure. This week’s recs include something for your eyes, ears, and some food for thought.
1/ Eyes: The Value of Remembrance - Bonnie Briant. When I first read the review, about how Briant’s photographs focus on remembrance over the disposable present of todays snaps, I was skeptical. How could this “theme” really be shown through still imagery. But, wow, was I wrong to be a skeptic. The images really do evoke past feeling, a past experience, just the past in general. It’s kind of remarkable.
This beach one is my fav…
2/ Ears: Angèle is a must-listen Belgian born, French pop star. Seriously, she’s really talented and fun and even collaborated with Dua Lipa, so you should at least know her name. She made a “me too” song (Balance Ton Quoi) and it’s actually incredible. I recognize that sentence is silly. She made a song that’s been a rallying cry throughout the “Me Too” movement. The video is funny and powerful and I just really love her. Check it out, here.
3/ Finally the thoughtful piece. Jane Mayer wrote about the Koch brothers again and if you have the stomach to read it, it’s really incredible journalism. Apparently, some key Republicans have been caught lying, again. This time it’s about dark-money and buying elections. It appears nobody, democrats and republicans alike, is ok with paying to win. Over half of Republicans want to stop the flow of dark-money into elections… which by the way, in 2020 more than 1 billion dollars was spent by dark-money groups on the Federal election cycle. So fuck that Citizens United case. Also, obviously, fuck Mitch McConnell.
Deep breaths.
I have an extra piece to share this week - specifically for New Yorkers. Another piece on grief, resilience and the hardships of this year specifically for those of us toughing it out in this incredible city. Here’s a bit I liked:
But New York doles out its rewards to those who interact with the place. To live here is to have claimed the little corners and haunts that make the whole thing work. Those who feel lucky to have lost precious little this past year — job intact, family healthy — still find themselves members of a quiet community that simply misses the old ways.
That’s all for this week. Till next Thursday…
