Morning. What an intense week - the Brooklyn subway shooting, the ongoing war(s), the increasing numbers of Covid infections. It’s a lot. I hope you’re finding moments of calm throughout this undeniably challenging time. Maybe these recommendations can provide a welcome distraction?
1/ You know I adore getting lost in slow, beautiful architecture videos on youtube. I love tours of tiny homes, long form docs on sustainable materials for building your home, and all those crazy off-the-grid youtubers posting about buying several acres of land in Italy or Switzerland or some remote European mountain town. Here’s a lovely house tour:
2/ Some interesting ideas in this piece by Jonathan Haidt for The Atlantic. I guess we should just toss our phones into a never ending pit. Is it a bit reductive to claim the “like button” is the direct link to our downfall? Probably. But, still some interesting points made.
Solid takeaways, though:
We must harden democratic institutions so that they can withstand chronic anger and mistrust, reform social media so that it becomes less socially corrosive, and better prepare the next generation for democratic citizenship in this new age.
