Yesterday in New York we managed to hit as low as 40 degrees, as high as 70 degrees, have a thunderstorm, have rain, have gusty winds and have some actual hail all within about 1-2 hours of time. It’s always encouraging when the weather reflects our collective mental disarray.
As I write this, it’s calm and beautiful and the sun is peaking past blooming trees.
I’m editing a short documentary on the Keystone Bison and it’s really interesting. I’m learning so much about the land, the evolution of North America and the meat we consume. The doc pushes for transitioning from cattle to Bison meat as our primary source - both for the environment and for individual health. I’ll share updates as they unfold.
Enough about me! On to this week’s recs:
1/ I read the obituary for Giancarlo DiTrapando and it made me kind of sad and also made me think back to when I spent more time on Tumblr and the internet and reading weird posts by aggressive writers.
Toward the end the writer Honor Levy is quoted. She was working with DiTrapano, about to publish through is Tyrant books enterprise. I looked her up and I read her latest post, Cancel Me.
In a first-person sort or ramble she touches on a lot of the thoughts, issues, realities of being a young adult right now. I was struck by her awareness of her audience. That style of talking-to, of acknowledging and addressing as contemporaries, is really comforting to me.
2/ For movie lovers, I came across Letterboxd Lucy yesterday. She’s a smart and discerning reviewer. She also has an incredible vimeo channel and releases these wonderful yearly compilations of her favorite films. This one from 2019 is especially great!
Her review of promising young woman was pretty compelling.
Also, lol.
3/ Lastly, I’ve recommended Louis Theroux’s podcast before. I loved this episode with Michaela Coel from back during lockdown. She’s such a thoughtful, intriguing writer. It’s a good listen if you’re looking to learn more about Coel and fame and writing.
That’s all for this week. Back next Thursday.
