Hello! It’s Thursday so it’s newsletter day. Just a quick ‘thank you’ to those of you reading and sharing this - it means a lot and I hope you’re finding at least pieces of it interesting. Feel free to share or comment your own interesting finds as well.
1/ This post will likely enrage you. We’ve known for a while that the wealthiest people in America avoid paying their “fair share” in taxes. But what we haven’t known is exactly how much. Now, we do. ProPublica dropped this massive piece outlining the top 25 richest Americans tax records. The takeaways are enough to make you never want to pay taxes again. The bit that really pissed me off was when Bezos reported losing so much that the government actually paid him $4k per dependent. He is truly scum.
2/ To follow up on that rage, I then read Rebecca Solnit’s piece on why it’s hard to enjoy the Biden presidency because the trauma of Trump persists. It really was a relentless and punishing four years of chaos and disarray. Also, her point about the dismantling of truth over and over is obviously extremely concerning. At least she’s a excellent writer?
3/ Ok, here’s one good thing. I loved this piece on Cherry Grove and how Fire Island is a gay safe haven. Many think the history of Pride starts at Stonewall - but we’ve always been around and we’ve always found ways to live and love and try our best to be free. I, for one, am thankful Cherry Grove existed and continues to exist.
