July! Insert something stupid about the heat and humidity, here!
Anyway, I watched an excellent German film called The Bloom of Yesterday. It was incredibly entertaining because it was surprising and funny and sad and intense and so many more things all together at once. I love films like this. I also love foreign films because they’re so not American. You just have to get things that aren’t spelled out for you and I so deeply love that respect the filmmakers give to their audiences. It’s on Amazon Prime and it’s a fun ride.
But guess what, that’s a bonus rec for this week. I have some more fun stuff for you to check out this week. Here we go with the official 3 recs of the week:
1/ There’s a new short film series called The Breakdown about climate change on Waterbear network (and soon to be on youtube, too). It’s a six-part series about how mankind has truly fucked up the climate and it’s really well done. It’s short, smart, and worth a watch. They get some great interviews and they do an excellent job with the editing and art direction.
2/ This news story on a young woman, Flora Blathwayt, making art out of plastics and trash she finds in the Thames is great. Yay creativity.
3/ Lastly, I enjoyed reading this profile on the Korean Vegan. This part was especially nice:
Throughout my life, food was always a big focus. In a general sense, I think it means something a little different for immigrants. When I left home for college, I hadn’t realized how reliant I was on my family for feeling safe and secure. Korean food became a stand-in for my family when I was away. It was something that symbolized safety and warmth.
Thanks for reading and see you next week!
