Happy Thursday!
Yesterday, sadly, Sinead O’Connor passed at age 56. Not only was she supremely talented, but she was outspoken and brazen and an inspiration. She will be missed.
Let’s get into the recs for this week:
1/ “On the power of queer cartoons to heal childhood wounds.” I love Heather Hogan’s writing so much - a true talent. This is a moving little piece on how queer characters in animation can provide a life raft.
You can't wait to tell them that until after they grow up or the damage will be done. You have to tell them while they're still children that they deserve love and that they deserve support.
2/ The most relatable experience creating! Hayao Miyazaki on creativity and selfishness.
3/ This is an older post on diversity on screen in TV and film. I found it to be still relevant and an interesting read.
What’s bad, it seems to me, is representation by quota and representation as a form of virtue-signaling.
That’s all for this week. Thank you as always for sharing and reading and doing all the things to support this little project. Let me know what you’re consuming and if you ever want something featured here. See you next Thursday (or this weekend if you’re a premo)!
