Good morning self, it’s Monday and I’m back at it.
Today’s recommendations are as follows:
1/ This is a great interview with Ellie Goulding about her “vocal instrument.” Listening to a talented musician walk through her process, through how she uses her voice and different instruments and styles, is (obviously? / oddly?) inspiring. I don’t know why it’s always so surprising when talented artists talk about process and are deeply thoughtful. Like, of course she’s thought about every aspect of every song she’s ever made - it’s literally her job. I guess she, and many other artists, make it seem so easy so I forget about the process. Process is what makes you an artist though. This video was a good reminder to dive in, full on, and respect the entire ride. Plus, it’s so fun to listen to her pop in and out of song while explaining her process. It’s so wild that I waited on-line, for over an hour after her show finished, to have her to sign a concert ticket back when I lived in LA. Ok, fangirl.
2/ This article had me thinking outside the box a bit. Amongst the myriad of ways covid-19 is messing with our formerly free and beautiful lives, we can’t leave out sex. Especially when it’s lots of sex with lots of different people. I do love picturing a poly house over-communicating. How very Christopher Guest of them.
3/ This is a tricky read. It’s packed with a lot. On the surface, it’s an excerpt from a book about a woman with an eating disorder. But within you’ll find notes on shame and identity, on social norms and evolution, on owning ones narrative, and much much more. There’s a lot here, that makes me curious to read the larger work. But for now, I’ll sit on this and think on it and try to be ok. The piece is called The Way I Ate and can be found in the New Yorker.
Ok, that’s all for today, see you tomorrow, self.
